France to begin intercepting migrant vessels in Channel after British demands
French officials have consented to start stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the UK.
The change in policy follows the British leader wrote to the French leader urging him to back the plan and stating there currently "have no effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French security forces will be allowed to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French police have rarely intervened to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the shoreline because it is considered excessively high a danger to both personnel and civilians.
"It is crucial that we deploy these methods this period... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French maritime police representative states personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the aim of safeguarding lives.
Notably, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had previously been suggested as a possible technique to snarl the propellers of the vessels.
This determination to intervene at all is a major advancement, following a brief change towards a more aggressive strategy this summer, which ceased when the previous government official left office.
That was highlighted in July, preceding a summit between the UK leader and French president, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to slash the hulls of a vessel.
Now French authorities will once more be allowed to intercept boats prior to they collect migrant passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be seeking methods to adjust to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the past.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for response.
